" Musical zip-line" is an interactive meditative walking path guided by sound that brings calmness and relaxation to Cambridge residents. Bells are placed along a path, and can be glided along in order to create song.

Whether it be the stress of school, the fast paced nature of work, or simply the hustle and bustle of everyday life, people need a way to relax and decompress. Meditation has been proven to be an effective way of relieving stress with numerous positive effects. Meditation Maze works to bring meditation to the lives of Cambridge residents, by acting as a tool used for walking meditation. The installation consists of metal posts connected with dowels, that allow a sliding piece with attached bells to move back and forth. As residents, walk along the path, they are easily able to move the bells along with them in order to produce sounds to guide their walk. With musical zip-line installed, Cambridge residents will have more access to meditation, and therefore decrease the overall stress in the Cambridge area.

The Music Box is a project worked on in collaboration with the Karam school, located in Reyhanli, Turkey. The town is mainly occupied by Syrian refugees, who are creating a musical playground to give back to the community that welcomed them. The Music Box allows children to play and explore the creation of music. It has been shown that both play and music accelerate brain development in the language and sound processing centers of the brain. For many refugees, who are learning new languages, this could be very helpful. The music box is made up of two cylinders. The inner cylinder holds the comb, which is a series of flat steel pieces that get plucked by the pegs positioned in the outer cylinder when the kids spin it. The kids can ride on the pegs as it spins around. The design takes into account that there will be many different users with a range of ages, by including components that are fun and engaging for everyone, Such as the spinning aspect for the kids and the platform to sit for parents.

Polyphonic Fun

Jackson Enyeart

Polyphonic Fun is designed to enhance a temporary playground created for young Syrian refugees in Reyhanli, Turkey out of a series of wooden cubes. Implementing musical play structures will encourage children to explore sound through the movement of their bodies. Each suspended balance board in the set plays sounds to resemble different instruments when the pressure sensor attached is triggered. When children step onto the board, the pressure sensor triggers the musical note C and plays notes of the C Major arpeggio based on how it is tilted. To improve the original version, each balance board now has a wooden hemisphere attached underneath to enhance the stability. Ropes run through the center of the boards to act as handles. The sounds are programmed in MaxMSP,  which has a larger sound library with more pleasant sounding notes. An accelerometer under the board reads the coordinates of the board's orientation to trigger note changes based on how it is tilted.
